Woman escapes driving ban                           27/6/08

A Point woman saved her job after she escaped a driving ban from Stornoway Sheriff Court.

Angusina Macmillan pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge of a vehicle when she appeared from custody at Stonoway Sheriff Court on Friday.

A tip-off led police to find the 48-year-old in the driving seat of a Ford Focus stopped at Knock School, Point.

The court was told the car was stationary and the engine switched off. She was being assisted by three men who were changing a flat tyre .

Macmillan of 4b Shulishader was three times the legal limit.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald said she had “brought a huge degree of shame on herself and family over this charge.”

He said there had been personal tragic events in her life with the pre-mature deaths of two very close family members in recent years and he suspected these events were a factor in her excess drinking.

He said she would lose her job as a care assistant if she did not hold onto her licence.

Sheriff W J Taylor QC said this was “salutary wake-up call”  and advised her to obtain help

He endorsed her licence with ten penalty points and imposed a £ 600 fine.
