Friday’s airport strike suspended 30/6/08
A second day of strikes at Western Isles and Highland airports has been temporarily lifted.
Stornoway, Balivanich and Barra airports in the region were due to shut for 24-hours this Friday as firemen took industrial action over pay.
Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) had to notify airlines by close of business today whether or not it expected strike action to close airports.
Urgent discussions between both sides this morning agreed to avoid the strike on Friday. Flights which were expected to be grounded will fly as normal.
A Hial spokesman said: “Following talks today, industrial action scheduled for HIAL airports on 4th July 2008 has been suspended.
“This will allow further talks and work on pay to take place between HIAL and the Unite trade union.
HIAL is now notifying airlines and flight operators that the industrial action planned for 4th July 2008 has been suspended and that its airports will be operating as normal on that day.
