Move to bring down fuel prices                        2/7/08
Speaking ahead of a crucial vote in the House of Commons tonight, Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil has urged MP’s from all parties to back the proposals for the introduction of a Fuel Duty Regulator. This would provide much needed relief for motorists from soaring fuel prices.
These proposals have the support of the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) and the Road Haulage Association (RHA).
Mr MacNeil said: “At a time when we see fuel prices in the Western Isles hitting £1.50p a litre for diesel and over £1.30 a litre for unleaded, this vote will be the last chance for the UK Government to secure a fair price on fuel. Many businesses are on the brink due to the escalating fuel prices –which have seen prices rocket by 40% over the past 12 months.
“Doing nothing is simply not an option and I hope that MP’s from all sides support the SNP’s proposals for the introduction for a Fuel Duty Regulator.
“Families and businesses cannot cope with the highest fuel prices in the world and MP’s must see sense on the matter.
“For an average family car with a 30 litre tank, £25 of the cost of fuel goes into the coffers of the treasury.
He added: “The Treasury must now see sense and ensure some of the windfall they have been getting through the high fuel prices, is used for a fuel duty regulator to moderate prices at the pump.”
