Sturgeon visits crumbling Barra hospital 2/7/08
On the second leg of her tour of the islands with local MSP Alasdair Allan and MP Angus MacNeil, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon visited Barra.
Alasdair Allan commented: "Nicola was clearly impressed with the hard work which the staff of St Brendan’s hospital are doing in less than ideal circumstances.
“The health board have now undertaken to provide a number of interim measures to improve the hospital building by autumn this year which I hope will make life easier.
“However, I think everyone now acknowledges that the building will have to be replaced at some stage and I will be keeping up contact with the Scottish Government on this issue.
"Nicola also met with ambulance staff about the Government’s plans to end single crewing and other issues and I also intend to keep in touch on this matter as Barra deserves to benefit from this policy, in the same way as other parts of the Western Isles are already starting to benefit.
"Finally, on her trip the Health Secretary also met with Cobhar Bharraigh and visited the surgery in Castlebay."
