Climber falls down cliff on Isle of Skye                        19/7/08

At half past four this afternoon (Saturday) Stornoway Coastguard received a call from Portree Police reporting that a male climber whilst climbing on a 40 metre cliff north of Staffin on the Isle of Skye had fallen into the sea.

Stornoway Coastguard tasked Portree Coastguard Rescue Team to the scene with cliff rescue equipment, and scrambled Rescue 100 Coastguard Helicopter. The casualty was in the water at the base of the cliffs, and his friend climbed down to help him, keeping his head above the water level.

Once the helicopter arrived on scene the casualty was airlifted to the Mackinnon Memorial Hospital at Broadford for medical treatment.

Ian Burgess of Stornoway Coastguard said:"The casualty has now arrived at hospital and is receiving medical treatment, however his injuries are reported to be non life threatening.

The British coastline offers a myriad of opportunities for climbers, and whilst we would never discourage people from enjoying them, we would always ask that they do so using the appropriate equipment, and also choose climbing sites within their comfort zones and capabilities."
