Plane crashes on its way to Stornoway 21/7/08
A light aircraft on its way to Stornoway crashed on Saturday.
The two French pilots Bernard Anstett, 67, and Edmond Ottria, 60, managed to escape from the wreckage . Their injuries are not life-threatening.
Engine problems forced the plane to crash land in North Wales in the middle of the flight to Lewis.
The pair left Cherbourg and planned to land at Stornoway for refuelling before flying across the North Atlantic to attend an airshow in the USA.
Extra aviation fuel was being carried in a large tank and it ruptured when the single-aircraft hit the ground creating fears of a blaze. Debris from the smashed plane was scattered over a wide distance.
One man was airlifted to hospital by a RAF helicopter; the toerh by a road ambulance. Both are said to be in a stable condition.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is due to investigate the accident.
