Drunk tractor driver sent to jail 29/7/08
A persistent motoring offender was sent to prison today (tues) for a year.
South Uist man Roderick Joseph Walker was also disqualified from driving for seven years when he appeared at Lochmaddy Sheriff Court.
The 39-year-old of 381 Garrynamoine pleaded guilty at an earlier court to driving a tractor while disqualified and on bail on various roads at Garrynamoine, Moor Cottages, South Boisdale and on the Polochar to Daliburgh road on 30th June last summer. He had also accepted he had no insurance. He received four months for the complaint.
His latest offences happened last month when he was caught drunk driving a tractor in South Uist. He previously admitted the charge plus a second of driving while also disqualified. On this he was sentenced to eight months plus a seven year driving ban.
Sheriff Andrew Berry said it was “hard to describe how severe” the last incident was pointing out he was “critically again with an excess of alcohol” - this time nearly 2.5 times the legal limit.
In jailing Walker, the sheriff pointed out he had a duty to protect the public.
