Enterprise minister asked to meet tweed industry reps 31/7/08
Western Isles parliamentarians, Alasdair Allan MSP and Angus MacNeil MP have today asked the Minister for Enterprise, Jim Mather MSP, to set up a meeting with representatives of the Tweed Industry when he visits the Western Isles.
Mr Allan said: “As is well reported, the Harris tweed industry has not been going through the easiest of times, a matter which I raised recently in the Scottish Parliament.
“Following a meeting with John Swinney MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, regarding this situation I have invited Enterprise Minister, Jim Mather MSP, to meet all sections of the tweed industry when he comes to the Western Isles at the end of August.
“I hope that this meeting will be a chance to emphasise the need for ongoing support for the tweed industry from all agencies of Government.
“There is much the Government can, and is, doing in terms of providing training, support and promotion for this excellent product. I have recently visited the Carloway Mill and I intend to visit the others along with the minister.”
Mr Macneil said: “Jim Mather has a well-earned reputation as a problem solver and will receive a warm welcome on the islands.
“This meeting will hopefully provide a chance to map out a positive future for the industry, which is of such importance to the isles economy.
“This is an opportunity for everyone to work together to ensure the tweed industry gets the future it deserves.”
